Six weeks ago Ladi Ajayi, the Head of the Sport Division at AKD informed the team he was going to be on a national TV show, Race Across the World (RATW)! This was exciting and to celebrate we launched a virtual watch party with #TeamAKD who have followed with anticipation his journey and Monique’s (his daughter) as they Race Across the World with the hopes of winning £25,000. Faith Anyanwu our Marketing and Communications Manager sat down with Ladi Ajayi to talk about his experience.
What made you decide to take part in Race Across the World?
Ladi: My daughter decided to apply for the programme having seen the two previous series. I just went along with it thinking that we would never ever be chosen. However, when it came down to making the final decision I couldn’t miss the opportunity to spend the time with my daughter that I probably never get the opportunity to have again whilst having an adventure that most people would give their right arm for.
At AKD we focus on immersive experiences through playfulness and power of conversation and Race Across the World (RATW) really feels and looks like an immersive experience. How did you find the experience?
Ladi: This experience was fully immersive, there was no hiding and you had to be on you’re A game at all times. It was some of the most challenging situations that I’ve found myself in, totally out of my comfort zone for much of it, extreme lows but equally massive highs. However I got to do this with one of the people who I love most in the world and was able to share unique experiences with them.
What was the most disruptive moment during RATW that brought about the greatest change in you?
Ladi: The whole journey was a disruptive moment, you are travelling vast distances without the luxuries of modern day travelling. No plastic cards with money, no instant access to information via a mobile smart phone, just a small amount of cash and your own ingenuity to get from A to B. The change that this brought out of me was completely trusting strangers and renewing my faith in humanity.
One of our credos is “stimulating brilliance”, how did you experience this during the race?
Ladi: I experienced stimulating the brilliance in my daughter and guiding her to be comfortable being uncomfortable, taking on challenges and never giving up.
Now that you are out of RATW is there anything you’d differently?
Ladi: Our race was our race, are there things that we would have done differently, maybe but I’m happy with our race and the experience that we had together.
Did you win? (we promise we will not tell anyone!)
Ladi: No spoilers…………Lool
How does it feel to be a celebrity!?
Ladi: I’m no celebrity, I’m just the same person that most people have known, those who don’t know me may get a small glimpse of who I am through this series.
What are your future plans now that RATW is over?
I would like to share my experiences with those who want to tackle big problems, can think big and make big changes. I want to bring this to the AKD Sports conference later in the year and stimulate the mindset and energy that is needed to be successful in a challenge like my daughter and I had.
