The rise and fall of an organisation are dependent on building effective teams. We often look to leaders as integral to an organisation’s success however leaders need to build teams to achieve this success.
Teams of today are more diverse and more dispersed than ever before and whilst teams now face new challenges what remains is the need for collaboration for true transformation. Transformative teams create greater impact and mean organisations can shift the dial.
Team building is a topic that managers and leaders in organisations are constantly seeking to understand however the focus should be on understanding yourself as a leader first. We often look to trying to understand others however understanding; you and your strengths, what you love to do, your proclivities, your lens, and your view of the world will influence the type of team you build.
Once you have accomplished this you will need to think through connections and understand the power of empathy, really being with people and focusing on developing high-quality relationships. People need to feel they are valued and will intrinsically begin to add value. However, some leaders can make their teams feel dispensable, but this does not foster a supportive environment. For teams to stimulate brilliance, be disruptive and create real change there needs to be effective collaboration. This is developed through connections which causes the team to thrive.
The next big question to ask yourself is “why”, the notion of “why” will give focus to the team. Why do you want to co-create? Why now? Why is the team essential to achieving this goal or purpose? Why is there a drive now to achieve this? These questions will provide both flexibility and much-needed structure. Your teams’ diverse thoughts, perspectives and skills will provide viable answers to achieving the why and ensure you achieve sustainable success.
Think through the next steps you need to take for your team to achieve success and do not assume that everyone has to do the same things. The main question is who the right people are and whether are they doing the right things, at the right time. With teams being more dispersed and digital ensuring these fundamentals are in place will mean you are able to identify the gaps and ensure the right support is in place.
